Synopsis

This book only reveals one single facet of many intricate aspects of Indonesian batik. Published partially to respond the latest batik wave in the country, this book wishes to be a small record of what has been achieved and is still being done by Indonesians, be they traditional batik artisans in many villages whose hands pour the malam (wax) onto sheer long of cotton or silk, the modern educated fashion designers whose passion ignited them to educate themselves in once ancient tradition – by learning from those village batik artisan among many – in order to make batik anew and ‘now’, or a throng who sell the merchandise from traditional market to flashy shopping centres.

It is hoped that this book will become a small reminder as much as it will inspire, how a local cultural form - a piece of fabled cloth - finds its way to be a global fashion.
