Synopsis

The National Museum, with a collection totaling approximately 100,000 artifacts, is an inexhaustible storehouse of information on the fields of archaeology, history, and anthropology, for scholars, university students, and school pupils. The collection has inspired many people to write monographs, scholarly journals, theses, reports, etc.

In order to make this wealth of information about the collection available to the general public, the National Museum is in the process of publishing a range of books with different themes.

This series, of which these three volumes are the first to appear, puts the collections of the National Museum of Indonesia in historical context. The museum is one of the most venerable of its kind in the world, and the story of its development is the narrative of the growing understanding of the Indonesian people and their cultures. From its roots in the 18th century, the museum has evolved and grown steadily. These volumes are meant to present to the public the spectacular achievements of Indonesian artists and craftsmen in a way which is both scholarly and refreshing. The combination of historical pictures and modern photography of the best pieces from the collection allows readers to enjoy the beauty of these objects in an easily portable format.
